MENTAL ILLNESS IN AUSTRALIA
According to the 2007 National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing, each year approximately twenty percent of Australians will experience a mental illness; with mild to moderate mental health conditions such as anxiety amongst the most commonly experienced issues.
The Northern Health Network, funded by the Adelaide PHN, provides free therapeutic counselling services to clients in the community with mild to moderate mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression.
Our aim at the Northern Health Network is to provide a range of services, to meet the needs of the community, whether that be for intensive, longer-term therapy for people with severe and enduring conditions, or more short term psychological assistance for clients who require a less intensive intervention.
We have a long tradition of providing evidence-based psychological therapies in the North and North Eastern regions of Adelaide. Since being selected as the preferred provider of evidenced based psychological therapy in the Western regions of Adelaide (by the APHN), we have now expanded our service footprint in this area.
We are pleased to announce that we have now added another program to the suite of services that we offer in the West. We are now launching a program focused on youth. Youth Wellbeing offers evidence-based
psychological therapies, free of charge, to young people living with a mental illness (or emerging illness) to clients living in the Western suburbs.
Youth Wellbeing offers a maximum of 12 therapeutic counselling sessions per calendar year, delivered by Mental Health Clinicians who are experienced and qualified psychologists, mental health nurses and social workers. They are specialised in working with youth and in the provision of short-term focused psychological strategies in the treatment of mild to moderate mental health concerns, such as anxiety and depression. The first 6 sessions are accessible to clients upon receipt of a Mental Health Treatment Plan from their General Practitioner (GP). A further 6 sessions are available after a review by their GP.
Youth Wellbeing appointments are delivered from our main Western office in Port Adelaide at the Northern Health Network’s new premises at 2/78-80 Dale Street.
