What is HEAL™?
The Northern Health Network has been funded by the Country SA PHN to facilitate The Healthy Eating Activity and Lifestyle (HEAL™) program in Gawler, Barossa, Lower North, Mid-North, Yorke Peninsula, Flinders Ranges, Whyalla, Port Lincoln, Ceduna and surrounding areas. The Healthy Eating Activity and Lifestyle (HEAL™) program is a lifestyle modification program facilitated by university-trained health professionals that supports participants to develop lifelong healthy eating and physical activity behaviours. HEAL™ offers eight weekly group exercise and group education sessions comprising of one hour of supervised low to moderate intensity physical activity followed by a one hour healthy lifestyle education class. One-on-one health consultations to assess current health status, fitness, measure progress, plan an appropriate exercise program and provide ongoing support are also provided at the start of the program and after the eight weeks of classes.
Who can participate in HEAL™?
The HEAL™ program is specifically designed as a prevention program for people who are at risk of developing cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. HEAL™ is also suitable for people seeking to manage their weight (overweight and obesity), type 2 diabetes, heart disease (including high blood pressure or high cholesterol) and metabolic conditions.
Who facilitates the program?
HEAL education and exercise sessions are facilitated by allied health professionals. These professionals are trained to support participants who may be unfamiliar with how to make positive health and lifestyle changes or who may be unsure of how to take up physical activity.
How do I refer my patients to HEAL™?
GPs and Practice Nurses are encouraged to contact the HEAL Project Officer at the Northern Health Network on (08) 8209 0700 for further information about how to refer patients to HEAL.
